This year no top tennis will be played in the CK Sportcenter on Kockelscheuer.
The organizers of the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open announced on Friday afternoon that this year's edition would not take place. The safety and hygiene requirements of the WTA ("Women's Tennis Association") make a normal tournament routine impossible.
This was also one of the points that led to the cancellation of this year's BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open. After consultation with the association of professional tennis players, it emerged that the tournaments had to follow different recommendations with different rules.
Minimum clearances should be guaranteed and Covid-19 tests should be performed. There was also talk of whether spectators were allowed to attend the events or not.
“Above all, the point of not playing without spectators doesn't fit into our concept. We want to organize a tennis festival where we can also offer a good supporting program. The unique atmosphere would be missing completely. Under these conditions, our ideas for a normal tournament schedule could not be fulfilled, ”said Maas.
But it wasn't just these WTA guidelines that stood in the way of Maas and Co. Added to this was the fact that there is no guarantee that the government would once again be able to organize major events with a large number of spectators at the time of the event.
“There are too many unknown factors to which we as the organization team have no answer and will not have one in a few months. That is too much uncertainty for us. A tournament as we know it is not possible this year. So now was the right time to make a decision together with our sponsors and partners, ”said the tournament director.
Thus, the 30th edition of the Kockelscheuer tournament, which was originally supposed to take place from October 17 to 25, but was later moved to November, will fall into the water this year. "The cancellation had already hinted a little. Of course, you are disappointed because you put a lot of work into it. But reason was greater than emotions, ”revealed Maas.
Ace up your sleeve
But the organization team still has a little ace up its sleeve. "We still have a plan B insight. We want to organize an event that should take place in November or December. I do not want to give any further details in this regard, because we do not know whether it can go over the stage or not. In any case, our anniversary edition would still be celebrated properly, ”said Maas in conclusion.
